The National Unity Government (NUG)

  • On Saturday, the All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF) (Chindwin Area) completed their basic military training Batch (1). Reportedly, the NUG Minister of Defence sent them a statement.
  • Regarding the junta’s air strike, there was a meeting between the NUG People’s Security and Defence Council and the leaders of the Chin National Front (CNF) on Saturday.
  • In a press conference on Sunday, the NUG Union Minister of Planning, Finance and Investment stated that they had been able to collect up to 3 billion MMK in taxes in areas under the NUG.
  • According to the NUG Minister of Planning, Finance and Investment, the Spring Development Bank, the very first bank to be opened by the NUG, will sell its shares to the public.
  • The NUG Ministry of Education announced that an investigative team had already submitted its final report on the case of the Free Online Education Institution Myanmar (FOEIM), which will soon be released to the public.

Revolutionary Activities

  • At Suwon Station in South Korea, a combined rally of Myanmar and Korean people protested against Myanmar’s military dictatorship on Sunday, raising a banner that said: ’Give back the public’s power to the public’.
  • In Kyaikto Township in Mon State, Aung Tun, the junta-appointed administrator of Mayanchaung Village, was shot dead.
  • In Kawkareik Township in Kayin State, Myint Aung, aged 64, the administrator of Ward (2) in Kyonedo, was shot dead at 11:45 am on Saturday.
  • In Ye-U Township in Sagaing Region, the junta army burnt over 600 houses and buildings in Chantha Village, including a church more than a century old and a Buddhist Religious Hall.
  • On Sunday, the military junta conducted an event on Kayar State Day at Loikaw City Hall. Reportedly, there was a bomb attack from a drone, that left a person dead and many others injured.
  • At a movement under the Political Department of the Burma Liberation Force, youths gave out the Rural Rebels Newsletter Issue (1/5) to people at a local market in Yinmabin Township in Sagaing Region on Sunday morning.
  • In Yinmabin Township, a rally of Mya Thwe led a protest against the military dictatorship on Sunday.
  • In Kantbalu Township, the junta army raided and set fire to Nyaunggone Village at about 4:00 pm on Saturday.

Ethnic Armed Organisations

  • In an interview with People’s Spring, the spokesperson of the Chin National Front/ Chin National Army (CNF/CNA) said that the general public already knows about the junta’s threat to the public because of the way the army has behaved in the past. He also claimed that the junta’s is committing terrorist acts.
  • In Thantlang Township in Chin State, the military junta conducted air strikes on Victoria Camp, the headquarters of the Chin National Front (CNF). On Friday, the CNF stated that it had been a cowardly act.
  • In Theinni District in Northern Shan State, there was a battle between the junta army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).
  • In Mone Township under Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade (3), the junta army shot mortars into local villages. According to KNU Central on Saturday, some local residents were killed and some houses were damaged.
  • Since Sunday morning, there has been fighting between the junta army and CDF Matupi because a large number of junta soldiers invaded Ngalai, which is under the control of CDF Matupi Brigade (2).

The Military Council

  • In Pulaw Township in Tanintharyi Region, the Global Treasure Bank closed its branch because it claimed there was no local stability.
  • At 9:30 pm on Saturday, the junta army shot at two men on a motorbike for no apparent reason on the Dawei-Tikhi Road Section. Reportedly, one of the motorcyclists was hit with a bullet and got arrested.
  • There was a vacancy announcement for 200 doctors at the Department of Medical Services under the junta Ministry of Health.
  • The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing claimed that despite the WHO’s recommendation of at least one doctor and 2.3 healthcare workers for every 1,000 people in a country, Myanmar just had 0.37 doctor and 1.47 healthcare workers per 1,000 people.
  • The junta propaganda media stated that the KNPP and PDFs had conducted a mortar attack on the opening ceremony of Kayah State Day at Loikaw City Hall, that killed one person and left many others injured.

Summary on 16 January

  • Judging by the tax which the NUG managed to collect, it is clear that the public sees them as the government.
  • Without the ability to carry out ground battles, the junta has been using fighter jets to carry out air strikes all over the country
