The Htaungwinsar Phoetkyamal prisoner aid group is currently supporting more than five hundred political prisoners by supplying them with regular monthly supplies in prison.

They are giving the family members of more than five hundred political prisoners supplies to deliver to their relatives in prison, according to Htaungwinsar Phoetkyamal.

The organisation was formed in March 2021 after the Burmese military overthrew the democratically elected government. It was set up to help family members get basic supplies to their relatives in prison.

"All parts of the revolution should be remembered, especially at this time…. Some take up arms to fight against the military dictatorships, on the other hand, there are others sacrificing their lives in prison. We initiated this program to respect their courage", Ko Thwe, a Htaungwinsar Phoetkyamal representative said to Mizzima.

Until now, the organisation has given help to more than 700 political prisoners in Yangon, Mandalay, Pakokku, Bago, Taungoo, and Hpa-An prisons, by once a month giving their families basic personal supplies medicines, clothes, and food to pass on to their incarcerated relatives.

“We, ourselves do not directly deliver items to the prisons.” said Ko Thwe, before explaining that it is costing Htaungwinsar Phoetkyamal about 10 million kyats a month to pay for the prisoners’ supplies.

According to an Assistance Association for Political Prisoners’ (AAPP) report, more than 13,000 political prisoners have been detained in prisons across the country since the military ousted the civilian led-government in Myanmar.
