Nine female medics were each sentenced to 12 years in prison in Sagaing Region’s Kalay Township Prison Court, on 29 November.

The nine were prosecuted for incitement under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code at a trial that started on 22 October 2022.

They were arrested last year on 16 November 2021, in a raid by junta forces on a PDF outpost in Kalay Township that also killed two men and one woman.

The sentenced women were named as: Dasiy Vanlalrawni, Zam Zo Zam, Lalmuankimi, Laltlanhlui, Lalpianfeli, Man Lam Dim, Niang Don Ciin, Lallunsangi and Masom Don Nghee.

According to legal practitioners, the junta has currently banned family visits to Kalay Prison and is only allowing deliveries of food and medicine into the prison.

On 27 November 2022, the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) announced that since the coup, on 1 February 2021, 3,434 women had been arrested by the junta and a further 308 women had been killed by junta soldiers.
