Myanmar squid is in high demand in Thailand and fishery companies say they are receiving better prices in comparison with last year.

Thailand buys Myanmar frozen squid at the price varying between 130 and 163 Thai baht per kilogramme (approx. 62.5 tical) depending on their sizes. This is approximately 11,000-13,000 kyat in Myanmar currency. Naturally processed and cleaned dried squid could fetch 570 Thai baht (about 47,000 kyat) per kiligramme, a squid fishery firm owner said.

In the previous years, Myanmar frozen squid fetched only 100-130 baht per kg depending on their size and the naturally processed and cleaned dried squid could fetch only 520-550 baht.

The fishermen catch squid in Rakhine State, Ayeyarwady Delta and the coastal areas in Tanintharyi Region.

Most of the Myanmar squid are caught in coastal areas in Tanintharyi Region and the fishermen have built fishing boats specifically for squid fishing equipped with bright lights for night fishing.

These squids are exported to Thailand as frozen raw squid from border trade stations in Mawtaung, Myawady, Myeik and Kawthaung on the Thai-Myanmar border. Some of them are exported as dried squid.
