During July the junta killed 21 women and detained a further 19 women, according to the Burmese Women’s Union.

The 21 dead women were killed in Yangon, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Sagaing and Tanintharyi regions, and Shan and Mon states between 1 and 27 July. 11 were killed by junta artillery, six were shot by junta forces, three were killed in airstrikes and one was burned alive.

The 19 detained were detained over the same period in the same states and regions. According to the Burmese Women’s Union, they were detained for a variety of offences, including for social media posts trying to persuade junta personnel to change sides and alleged ties to revolutionary forces. Some were detained for allegedly being linked to the bombing of junta offices.

The Burmese Women’s Union also warned that due to difficulties in gathering information on the ground, the actual number of women killed and detained by the junta in July may even be higher.

Since the 1 February 2021 coup until 27 July 2023, the junta has killed 590 women, more than 3,647 have been arrested and of those 835 have been convicted, according to the Burmese Women’s Union.
