Junta torches tea shop and three houses in Monywa Township village

Myanmar junta soldiers set fire to a teashop and three houses when they raided Nyaungpinthar Village in Sagaing Region’s Monywa Township, on 12 June.

About 30 junta soldiers from the Ma Au Checkpoint at the entrance to MonywaTown set fire to the tea shop and three houses all located on the Monywa to Amyint Highway near Nyaungpinthar Monastery at around 1:00 p.m. on 12 June.

A Monywa resident said: “There was no fighting, they [the junta soldiers] just started firing. After everyone had run away they just burnt them [the tea shop and the houses] down.”

After setting fire to the buildings the junta soldiers returned to the Ma Au checkpoint at about 3:00 p.m., according to the resident.

A woman was also reportedly hit by a bullet fired by the junta troops as they entered Nyaungpinthar Village

The village has about 70 houses and it is estimated that the fires caused about 50 million kyats of damage.

Anti-junta forces frequently attack the Ma Au Checkpoint with both small arms and heavy weapons according to locals from Monywa Township.
