Junta soldiers torch houses and barns in Sagaing’s Kantbalu Township

Junta soldiers burnt down nine houses and five barns in Magyikone Village, in Sagaing Region’s Kantbalu Township on 3 July.

A column of 100 junta soldiers marched from Chatgyi Village Camp in Kantbalu Township and arrived in Magyikone Village, at 1:45 PM on 3 July, where they set fire to the nine houses and five barns.

Later that evening the soldiers burned down 25 internally displaced people’s (IDP’s) shelters in Chaungchar Village, also in Kantbalu Township.

“Nine houses and five barns were torched in Magyikone Village by the military column. The same military column also set fire to [IDP] shelters near to Chaungchar Village in Kantbalu Township”, said an official from the Kantbalu District branch of the Kyunhla- Kantbalu Activist Group, a group that collects information on fighting in Kantbalu district and helps IDPs in National Unity Government (NUG) controlled areas.

According to the group, in June 2023, junta forces from the army and the Pyu Saw Htee junta-aligned militia set fire to 61 houses and 16 barns in Kantabulu Township, killing one person.
