Imprisoned former Tanintharyi Region Chief Minister facing further charges

The former Chief Minister of Tanintharyi Region, U Myint Maung, who is already serving an 11 year sentence for trumped-up charges, is now facing two further charges, according to a statement by the Dawei Political Prisoner Network (DPPN).

A DPPN official said: “The ousted chief minister will face two charges under section 130 (a) of the Penal Code for offences relating to provisions in the constitution and acts of Parliament at Dawei Prison Court on 28 November.”

Section 130 (a) penalises those who violate or do not act on existing laws and carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison plus a fine.

Previously, on 11 November 2021, U Myint Maung was sentenced to 11 years on three counts under Section 505 (b) of the penal code relating to creating public mischief and counts under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust by a public servant or banker and Section 25 of the Natural Disaster Management Law.
