Former mayor and deputy mayor of Naypyidaw imprisoned for corruption

The former Naypyidaw mayor and deputy mayor under the National League for Democracy (NLD) government were sentenced to three years in prison at Naypyidaw Prison Court on 11 October, according to a source.

The former mayor, Dr. Myo Aung was charged under anti-corruption laws over five land deals, including the sale of a plot of land in Naypyidaw’s Dakkhina Thiri Township to someone who opened a restaurant on the land.

He was found guilty of five charges of corruption and sentenced to three years in prison for each. The sentences are to be served concurrently (at the same time) meaning that Dr. Myo Aung will spend three years in prison.

The former deputy mayor, U Ye Min Oo, who also served as the Yangon Minister of Planning and Finance under the NLD, was charged with corruption in connection to the sale of two plots of land. He was found guilty of two charges of corruption and also sentenced to three years in prison for each, to be served concurrently, meaning he will also have to spend three years in prison.

U Ye Min Oo is also facing a further charge under Section 409 of the Penal Code for “criminal breach of trust by a public servant or banker, merchant or agent”, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonmen
