An event to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 8888 Uprising by Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement was held in New York City, on the evening of 5 August.

Around 300 people of Burmese backgrounds gathered for the event, which was held in New York City’s Times Square on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00p.m.

The Event was organised by the city’s Myanmar community to commemorate the 8888 uprising in 1988 and raise awareness of the current, ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights in Myanmar. It also provided a platform for members of the Myanmar community, both in the United States and abroad, to come together and reflect on the significance of the 8888 Uprising.

At the event participants shared personal stories, experiences, and memories of the 8888 Uprising. They also discussed the sacrifices made by those who fought for democracy, the challenges they faced, and the progress made. There were also speeches, cultural performances, and exhibitions showcasing artwork and photographs related to the 8888 Uprising.

There was also an event in London on 5 August to commemorate the 8888 Uprising. Protesters gathered in Parliament Square at 2:00 p.m. before marching to the prime minister’s house, 10 Downing Street at 2:30 p.m.

Following the protests a fundraising event was held in London’s Green Park to raise funds and awareness for humanitarian aid in Myanmar.

The actual anniversary of the 8888 Uprising is 8 August and local resistance forces in Myanmar and ethnic Burmese people around the world have also made plans for celebrations on 8 August.
