Chairperson of Sagaing University Students' Union arrested at military checkpoint

Ma Aye Nanda Soe, 21-year-old, chairperson of the Sagaing University Students' Union (ABSU), was arrested on the evening of September 19 at a checkpoint on the way back from Mandalay to Sagaing.

The Students' Union said that she was arrested after her identity card was checked at the checkpoint of Sagaing entrance.

Ma Aye Nanda Soe, a fourth-year student at Sagaing University of Education, took an active part in the attempt to overthrow the military dictatorship.

ABFSU’s news and information said in the statement on September 21, " [I]t is still unknown where she was taken into custody. Therefore, we are very concerned for the safety and security of our comrade Aye Nandar Soe.”

“Students are those who can mobilize the people. The military is afraid of those who are in solidarity with the people. That's why, they arrest students as soon as they hear student’s union and students” said an information officer.
