Opposition & Ethnic Election Stance

The Opposition is made up of democratic groups formed during the 1988 uprisings and is primarily led and represented by Aung San Suu Kyi and her party the National League for Democracy (NLD). Several ethnic parties and organisations are also politically aligned with the NLD. They see this year's elections as a ploy by the SPDC to legitimise military rule in Burma and have actively tried to pressure and persuade the government to make the process more inclusive and free and fair. Their activities have been based largely on international support to exert economic and political pressure or provide incentives for the junta to work with the opposition, as well as direct negotiations between the junta and opposition. However the government has been impervious to the opposition's strategies and is determined to see through its 7-step road map for democracy and to hold elections as scheduled this year. As the NLD has decided to boycott the elections on March 29th, the party will no longer exist after May 6th when party registration for the election ends. However members of the NLD CEC have formed a new party called the National Democratic Front and the NLD as well as other opposition groups remain active in campaigning to boycott the upcoming elections.
