International Response


The International Community has been actively trying to persuade the government to make the elections more inclusive and ensure a real democratic process. However the the Military Junta's scepticism of foreigners has limited the impact of international efforts in influencing event in Burma.

Urges government to:
  • allow the UN a role in the transition process
  • release political prisoners
  • create conditions for credible elections
  • have time bound dialogue with the opposition
  • publish electoral law and set a date as soon as possible
Offering to:
  • Facilitate dialogue between the SPDC and Aung San Suu Kyi, NLD
  • Provide technical assistance for the general election to be held in 2010.
Actions
  • UN special envoy Tomas Ojea Quintana called for an investigation into whether the Burmese regime is guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity in his report following his visit to the country in February 2010.
