Background
The National Unity Party was formed in 1988 by the military junta and former ruling Burma Socialist Political Party (BSPP) Members. It was one of 5 parties that participated in the 1990 elections (coming in 3rd place with 10 out of 492 seats) and re-registered with the election commission. Today it still stands for the Burmese way to socialism, claiming three million party sympathisers around the country. It is also considered to be the second strongest party in the November 2010 election with 900 candidates contesting.

NUP has shortlisted 500 youths across the country who will contest in about 300 constituencies. NUP has branch offices across the country, but it has been silenced for the last two decades.

Led by former deputy commander in chief of Burma's armed forces, Tun Yi, the NUP has 23 central executive committee members, including General Secretary Than Tin and Joint General Secretary Khin Maung Gyi. The party will base its headquarters in Bahan Township in Rangoon Division.

The party's political ideology is to "serve the people" and has a practical approach based on a middle way.
