Background
The SPDC’s number two Maung Aye is tipped to take over the junta if Than Shwe steps down. However the rumoured rivalry with Than Shwe has led some to speculate that he might meet the same fate as Khin Nyunt, giving way to General Thura Shwe Mann to become Army chief and SPDC deputy chairman.

He has a reputation for ruthlessness and is considered to be responsible for massive military build-up. Maung Aye is known to head the Hardline faction, belonging to the old-school isolationists. He is virulent in his attacks of the democratic opposition and ethnic groups. He resumed offensives against Karenni insurgents after Khin Nyunt reached a ceasefire agreement in March 1995. He opposed engagement with Southeast Asian countries and is believed to be responsible for implementing controls on international NGO activity and restricting UN operations.

He has been reported to have been in poor health for several years and has been treated several times for prostate cancer. He is rumoured to be a hard drinker.
