Background
The Shan State Army-North is the faction of the Shan State Army (SSA) that signed a ceasefire with the government, whilst the SSA-South continues its armed struggle. The objective of the SSA-N is to establish an autonomous Shan State within a federated Union of Myanmar.

The original SSA was formed in 1964 and its political wing the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) was established in 1971. The SSA pursued an armed rebellion against the ruling military junta until 1989, when the collapse of its Chinese-backed ally, the Communist Party of Burma (CPB), removed its main source of arms and ammunition.

In April 2010 sources said the SSA-N is likely to split into two factions due to a disagreement over joining the military regime's border guard force (BGF), but this was officially denied by the party.
