New Delhi - Two earthquakes near India's eastern archipelago of Andamans and Nicobars were recorded on Friday.

Officials at the Indian Tsunami Warning Centre in Hyderabad told Mizzima the two quakes measuring 6.7 and 6.4 on Richter respectively began at about 5:30 p.m. (Indian Standard Time).

"The quakes were near the Andaman & Nicobar Island," an official said.

The official said the extent of damage caused by the quakes was still not known.

"The epicentre was in the Bay of Bengal," the official said.

The official, however, said the quakes were not powerful enough to affect other countries on the Bay of Bengal, including Burma, which is currently reeling in the aftermath of last month's killer Cyclone Nargis.

"No, it is too far from Burma, so it won't affect the country," the official said.

India's eastern archipelago of Andamans and Nicobars suffered heavy human casualties and physical damage during the 2004 Asian Tsunami.
