New Delhi - The Indian government has dispatched two naval ships along with relief supplies to cyclone-hit neighboring Burma, according to a government announcement.

The naval ships - Rana and Kirpan - are carrying food, tents, clothes, medicine and blankets, the announcement added.

The Burmese government has accepted emergency relief supplies from neighbouring
countries, including India and Thailand, while it has called for the international community to provide emergency aid.

According to the reports filtering in through government figures and international aid agencies in Burma, the total death toll from Cyclone Nargis could exceed 10,000 and thousands of people were left homeless, especially in the Irrawaddy Delta, one of the major rice-producing areas in the country.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"The US is certainly doing the most for the opposition. There has been real success in training and forming an underground movement through religious organisations and monastic organisations. These provide the best cover inside Burma. The monks can spread their training very effectively."

Soe Aung, the chief spokesman for the National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB)
