Five students injured as school collapses in Tharkayta

Rangoon: Five students were injured after a school collapsed on Tuesday morning in Tharkayta Township in Rangoon.

The No 8 Basic Education Middle School, a two-story brick building was  – had to be reopened earlier this month without proper maintenance amid it was severely damaged during Cyclone Nargis last month.

A source also said that the maintenance of most school buildings especially in the city's outer suburbs has been very poor in the wake of the cyclone in the Irrawaddy Delta and Yangon Division.

The source added that the military government had forced township education officers and headmasters/headmistresses to reopen the schools on June 2.

The education department people would have been fired if they failed to implement the order, the source said.
