Rangoon (Mizzima) - A new political party dubbed the Democratic Party, floated by former politicians will be contesting the forthcoming general elections in 2010, as it feels the polls are an opportunity to usher in changes, party chairman Thu Wai said on September 14.

“We view this election as an opportunity for transition to democracy,” he said. A former Chairman of the Democratic Party Thu Wai has served as a personal assistant to the former Vice-Prime Minister Kyaw Nyein and was a journalist.

Speaking at a press conference in Rangoon, Thu Wai said the party aims to bring changes in Parliament after the election.

Daughters of former Prime Ministers have joined the party. Than Than Nu, daughter of former Prime Minister U Nu is the secretary general of the party, whereas Nay Chi Ba Swe, daughter of former Prime Minister Ba Swe and Cho Cho Kyaw Nyein, daughter of Vice-Prime Minister Kyaw Nyein are secretary members.

The newly formed Democratic Party has 17 executive and 10 central executive members.

Thu Wai said the party will mobilise new members, who are willing to adhere to the party policy.
