Chiang Mai (Mizzima) - More than 300 houses were gutted on Monday when a fire broke out in Mandalay's Myayee Nanda Myothit, eyewitnesses said.

A local eyewitness told Mizzima that a fire broke out in Burma's second largest city of Mandalay's Chan Mya Tharsi town and gutted residential houses in ward No. 14, 17 and 18 of Myayee Nanda Myothit, at about 3 p.m (local time).

"Vehicles from the Red Cross have come to the site. The fire started at about 3 p.m and was brought under control at about 4 p.m," the eyewitness told Mizzima.

However, the Chan Mya Tharsi Township fire department said it was still investigating the cause of the fire and declined to provide further details.

Injured victims have been sent to a local hospital and Buddhist monasteries in Myayee Nanda Myothit.
