Floods in Laputta subside

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) - The flood caused by incessant heavy rains that forced residents of Laputta town in Burma’s coastal division of Irrawaddy to leave their homes subsided on Tuesday, locals said. Local residents said the flood water level that was up to a man’s height has come down to knee height. Earlier residents in ward no (2), (3), (10) and (7) were forced to leave their homes and take shelter in Buddhist monasteries as the floods inundated much of their houses. “Today, there is no more rain and the sun is shining. The water level has dropped considerably,” a local resident told Mizzima over telephone on Tuesday. Victims of the flood have taken shelter in houses on higher ground as well as in monasteries and are depending on food packets donated by other residents. Locals said the flood was caused as a result of blockages in the drainage system of the town. < Prev   Next >
