Leaders of the Kachin Independence Army and the Tatmadaw are due to meet in Nay Pyi Taw on March 16, said a senior official from the Myanmar Peace Center.
U Hla Maung Shwe said the meeting had been arranged for about noon.
He was speaking on March 15 after a two-hour meeting in Nay Pyi Taw between the government’s Union Peacemaking Working Committee and a delegation headed by the KIA’s deputy chief of staff, General Gun Maw.
Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham led the UPWC delegation at the meeting, said to be the first bilateral talks between the government and the KIA since a ceasefire collapsed in Kachin State in 2011.
U Hla Maung Shwe said he did not know who would represent the Tatmadaw at Monday’s meeting, but that it would also be attended by some Union government ministers.
The KIA has sought talks with Tatmadaw Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
“If the leaders have free time, I hope we can meet,” Gen Gun Maw said.
