The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday denied media reports that Russia planned to block a draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Myanmar, Xinhua reported on 26 October.
"The work on the draft continues. And I want to stress that we are ready for a constructive discussion of further steps of the UNSC on this issue," the foreign ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted as telling a news briefing.
Earlier on Thursday, Russian daily newspaper Izvestia quoted unnamed diplomats as saying that Russia would prevent the approval of the resolution overtly critical of the Myanmar authorities, which had been prepared by France and Britain.
According to the Xinhua report, Zakharova said that the Franco-British draft contained "a series of problematic points, which in particular do not correspond fully to the reality of Rakhine state (in southwest Myanmar) and reflect inadequately the efforts of interested parties aimed at curtailing the crisis there."
