The commander in chief of Myanmar’s army has said he will respect the result of November’s historic general election, even if the opposition wins.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC broadcast on 20 July, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said he believed the election would be both free and fair.
When asked should the opposition win the election would the army respect that result and allow them to govern he said that whoever wins he would respect that result if they win fairly.
The Senior General also said that until long running rebel wars end, the military will not be stepping back from politics stating that the army would have to keep going until there was disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) and that if the Government can give some security to its people then he was sure the military would just stay in its military role but that the timeframe depends on the situation.
