The Second Upper House approved an urgent motion to end fighting in Rakhine State, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported on 8 May.
U Wai Sein Aung of Rakhine State Constituency 1 submittedthe urgent motion calling for an immediate end to fighting between the Myanmar Military and the Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State. The motion also called for bringing the AA into political dialogue.
Brig-Gen Aung San Chit, a military-appointed MP, objected to the use of the term ‘AA Tatmadaw’ in the motion, saying there is only one Tatmadaw in the country and that the AA is an insurgent group.
Moreover, he also protested the submitter’s comments, in which he said civilians were forced to become porters. The military MP denied that porters were conscripted on the ground, the report said.
