Union Election Commission (UEC) Chairman Hla Thein said that the UEC would conduct the compiling of the electoral roll using a door-to-door system to ensure an accurate electoral roll and free, fair and transparent elections in the forthcoming by-elections. The by-elections are scheduled to be held on April 1, 2017.
UEC Chairman Hla Thein was speaking at a meeting with political parties held yesterday at UEC Office in Naypyitaw.
Hla Thein added that the local election commissions concerned will compile the electoral roll this coming November in collaboration with local wards, village-tracts administrators, 100-household chief and 10-household chief.
UEC first announced that the by-elections would be held for a total of 18 vacant seats in local legislative assemblies and lower and upper house but now this number would be raised to 19 after the death of the Shan State, Yawngshwe constituency legislator.
Hla Thein further said that electors had to cast their vote by stamping the ballot paper in the by-elections as they did in the general elections held in 2015.
Both the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) and opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) said that they would contest all vacant seats in the by-elections.
