Tourist entry fees to be hiked at Shwedagon Pagoda

Foreign tourist entry fees for Shwedagon Pagoda, popular with foreign visitors, will be raised to 10,000 Kyat per head starting from December 1.
Currently the entry fee is 8,000 Kyat, a fee collected since 2016, and this will be hiked to 10,000 Kyat as new entry fee, Shwedagon Pagoda Trust office said on November 24.
Shwedagon Pagoda Trust Office, officer in-charge Tun Aung Ngwe told Mizzima on November 24: “Yes, the entry fee will be hiked to 10,000 kyats from current 8,000 kyats starting from December 1.”
New entry fee rates will be announced officially on signposts at the pagoda entry gates to inform tourists and their tour guides.
According to the figures released by officials, over 610,000 tourists visited Shwedagon pagoda in 2016 and this year 56,398 tourists visited the pagoda within the month of October.
Last year’s fees for foreign visitors amounted to at least $4 million, if the figures are correct.
