Opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is not ruling out the possibility that her National League for Democracy might boycott the upcoming national elections, according to an interview with Reuters published on April 4.
In a wide-ranging discussion, the NLD leader said boycotting the election was an “option” if the military-drafted 2008 Constitution that bars her from being president remains unchanged, but added that this was not the best choice.
Although she was critical about the regime of President U Thein Sein, she emphasised the need to reconcile with the military which detained her for 15 years until her release from house arrest in 2010.
More to the point, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi expressed concern that the polls might be postponed or cancelled by the government, echoing warnings by close observers that the government might use the excuse of instability in the country or another reason to not hold the elections.
