New Delhi (Mizzima) – Over 20 convicts who broke out from Pyapon prison when Cyclone Nargis lashed the region have been rearrested, according to the police.

The deadly cyclone Nargis, which hit the region on an unprecedented scale on May 2-3 last year, ravaged the prison. Some of the prisoners made good their escape. Some of them were said to have been recaptured.

The police official from Pyapon prison declined to provide further details. He just said that the roof of the prison was ripped apart by the deadly cyclone. Some of the prisoners managed to break free and escaped from the prison, he said. All these prisoners were charged under section 224 of the Penal Code.

Cyclone Nargis left over 1, 35,000 people dead and over 1 million homeless.

The remaining convicts are being hunted with arrest warrant issued against them. This includes Ko Zar Ni who was sentenced to prison for murder and destroying evidence that is his victim's mortal remains, according to today's 'New Light of Myanmar'.

Nine persons including trader-culprit Zar Ni a.k.a. Zar Ni Aung (28) from Bo Min Yaung Street, Ward No. 18, Pyapon were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one and-a-half years to four years for murder and destroying evidence which in this case was the victim's corpse. Ko Zar Ni is still at large.

An official from Pyapon Prison Department refused to answer when Mizzima contacted him over telephone. The Pyapon prison has been renovated since the cyclone.
