Background
Diplomatic relations since: 8 June 1950
Burma Policy: Engagement, Strategic Cooperation, 5 Principles of Peaceful Existence, Paukpaw relations, Trade, Aid and supporting the role of the Good Offices of the UN Secretary General and ASEAN
Major issues:
  • Trade and ‘Go West’ development policy
  • Geopolitical interests
  • Oil and gas
  • Arms trade
  • Cross border crime (including gambling, human trafficking)
  • Drug trafficking
  • Illegal migration
  • Cross border ethnic conflict
  • AIDS and cross border diseases
Burma’s relations with neighbouring China developed rapidly after isolation by the West following suppression of the 1988 uprisings. It provides an economic and military lifeline and is a critical supporter in the international community. It has significant influence over border ethnic ceasefire groups and large stakes in the security of the country due to its porous border. Burma is also strategically important for China’s military, economic and energy needs.

With regards to democracy in Burma, China is putting pressure on Burma to speed up the political process. In the last decade, China has called for a national reconciliation and the installation of a democracy that is best suited for the country.

Fighting in August drove over 37,000 refugees from Burma into China, raising concerns from the Chinese government about Border Stability. This was especially highlighted in Vice-President's Xi's visit in December 2009. late October, China's CNPC started building a crude oil port in Myanmar, part of a pipeline project aimed at cutting out the long detour oil cargoes take through the congested and strategically vulnerable Malacca Strait.
