Malaysia has been active in promoting international assistance for Burma’s democratic efforts and a role for ASEAN as well as the good offices of the UN Secretary General. However Malaysia did not support the UN Security Council’s resolution on Burma claiming that it was not a threat to international and regional peace and security. There are major division in the Malaysia government about its Burma policy, and the ASEAN Interparliamentary Minister’s Caucus on Burma which is the most influential group of critics of the regime was founded and headed by Malaysia politicians. 9 Feb 2010: Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman told AFP that "We want a free, fair and an inclusive election. We should give everybody a chance, including Aung San Suu Kyi," adding he thought the vote would be held "around October".
