Indonesia has supported a ‘soft power approach’ and regional mechanisms to bringing democracy to Burma. It has also recognised the importance of China and India in influencing the regime and actively supports the good offices of the UN Secretary General (rejecting the UNSC’s resolution on Burma). Owing to its own experience of successful transition from military rule to democracy, it has offered to share its experience with the Burmese regime to promote reform. Indonesia has taken several confidence building measures but at the same time become more outspoken in criticising the junta’s treatment of its opposition. Has established a domestic caucus on Burma Indonesia is one of Burma's 10 biggest trade partners after Thailand, India, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia. |
