Thalun International School announced Friday its expansion with its Ahlone Campus in downtown Yangon scheduled to open on August 1, 2016 with classes starting on August 9, 2016, according to a press release July 1.
The Ahlone Campus, currently at its final stages of construction, is already accepting applications and enrollments for the Academic Year 2016-17 for Pre-kindergarten through to Grade 8.
The school with its US-based curriculum will expand in the coming years to offer up to Grade 12.
Thalun International School is built on a philosophy of high standards of intellectual and personal development within a caring, respectful, multicultural environment, according to their press release. Pupils at the Ahlone Campus will benefit from up-to-date U.S. and international programs.
“Our students will be taught at the same standards of education that are available in the United States,” said Project Director Ko Thiha Alan Tin. “Thalun International School’s adherence to the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) and Common Core Plus standards will ensure students can progress to top schools and universities in the U.S.A. and anywhere in the world.”
The school’s medium of study is English, but pupils in every grade will take Myanmar language and Myanmar studies classes.
Mr. Tin added: “We also offer excellent learning modules such as “Open Mind” to teach students life skills and how their studies and learning relate to their own lives and Myanmar society. Personal development and critical thinking are key attributes for empowering our students as well-balanced leaders of tomorrow whether their careers are in Myanmar or abroad.”
To provide quality education Thalun International School has strict requirements for teachers and classroom sizes to assure personal attention to students, as well as international educational standards. The Ahlone Campus will open with 19 teachers from the U.S., Myanmar, Singapore and Philippines, all with international experience. Each teacher has a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree with teaching certificates or licenses along with 5 or more years of teaching experience.
The target class size is 18 students per class with a 10:1 FTE student teacher ratio. The soon-to-open Ahlone Campus is located at 108 Hnin Si Street, Saw Yan Paing (South) Ward, Ahlone Township. It can accommodate upwards of 200 students in 18 classrooms. Every classroom has mounted projectors and the entire new campus will have Wi-Fi available for students and faculty. In addition, the campus has computer and science labs, arts and music rooms, a canteen area, a covered basketball court, a mini-football court and separate play areas for young children. Scheduled extra-curricular activities include martial arts, dance, and sports such as volleyball, basketball, table tennis with others to be added later.
