School children who live off the electrical grid around the ancient temples of Bagan, the site of a proposed UNESCO World Heritage listing, will soon have electricity for about 40 schools.
The Panasonic Corporation and UNESCO has signed a project agreement with government officials to install 500  solar energy storage units at the school sites.
In Myanmar, 68 percent of its population is said to have no access to electricity.
The “eneloop” electrical energy storage units will capture energy from the sun, store it, and make it available day or night to the schools.
At present, 1.2 billion people, or about 17 percent of the world’s population, live in areas without electricity.
