Taiwan is seeking to bring in migrant workers from Myanmar to resolve labour shortages in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, reports CNA on March 9.
The director general of the country’s Workforce Development Agency, Mr Liu Chug-chun, told the media that in the initial stage that about 100-200 Myanmar nationals would be brought in on a trial basis.
The program will start at the end of April or early May at the earliest.
If the plan works out, it will be the first time ever that Taiwan hires workers from overseas to carry out agricultural work.
Mr Liu said Myanmar workers would be a good fit for the local economy as they have similar religious beliefs and lifestyles as people in Taiwan.
