Speaker of Myanmar's House of Representatives and Union Parliament Thura U Shwe Mann has called for a minimum national wage for workers soon as possible, reports the Global New Light of Myanmar on April 25.
U Shwe Mann told a meeting of employers and workers in Yangon that the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security had been taking too long to finalise  the minimum wage.  He said the minimum wage is expected to be announced next month.
He put forward the proposal that both employers and workers consider the daily wage level of K3,000 ($3) for government employees set by the Ministry of Finance and Revenue as a standard for setting the minimum wage level for other workers.
Neighbouring countries like India and Bangladesh have minimum wages for agricultural and industrial workers that are supposed to be observed across the nation.
