The number of tourists visiting Mandalay, the second largest city in the country, was 242,566 in 2014 and it rose to 306,432 in 2015 which is a 26% increase, the Mandalay Hotel and Tourism Department said on 9 January.
Most of the tourists were from China, Thailand, France, Germany and the United States of America.
An official from the department said that the number of tourists in 2016 would depend on flourishing investment in Myanmar and the global and ASEAN economy.
The department said in November last year that the number of tourists visiting Mandalay from January to October 2015 was 224,358 and there were 165,000 in the corresponding period in 2014, resulting in an increase of 35%.
The department had estimated that the number of tourists visiting Mandalay for whole 2015 would be 300,000 and the actual number was more than expected.
A spokesman for the department said that they were planning more flights to Mandalay by both international and domestic carriers.
Currently, eight domestic airlines and five international airlines fly to Mandalay.
