Heavy rains and flooding since mid-July in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, Shan State and Kachin State have destroyed more than 24,000 hectares of paddy fields but the country’s exports may not be affected significantly.
This was the message of the general secretary of the Myanmar Rice Federation, according to a report by Oryza.com, which follows the rice trade, on July 30.
According to a statement from the agriculture ministry, about 981 hectares of summer paddy, about 14,676 hectares of monsoon paddy, and about 1,240 hectares of seedling fields have been negatively impacted by flooding as of July 19.
However, the MRF general secretary told media that overall yields are likely to suffer slightly but this may not affect exports.
He urged the government to support farmers as per the new laws that have been framed to protect farmers.
