Shopping is about to become simpler for travellers in Myanmar. City Mart, the country's largest supermarket chain, has teamed up with Visa and KBZ Bank to roll out card acceptance at selected branches, a first for a supermarket chain in Myanmar, reports the Bangkok Post on April 2.
Customers can now pay with their Visa debit and credit cards at City Mart in Junction Square, Market Place by City Mart at Golden Valley and Market Place by City Mart at Parkson, all in Yangon.
"We congratulate City Mart on becoming the first supermarket chain to roll out card acceptance in Myanmar. For customers, paying with a Visa card is simple, safe and secure, eliminating the risk of carrying too much or too little cash," said Mr Hiro Taylor, Visa's country manager for Myanmar.
"This is particularly good news for tourists buying gifts in Myanmar to take home. Businesses can increase their sales safely and securely, knowing their money will be deposited to their bank accounts the following day.
"Visa is proud to support the roll-out of card acceptance in Myanmar, and we look forward to working with more merchants as we continue to develop the financial infrastructure and expand access to electronic payments across the country — connecting Myanmar to the world."
Visa cards are now accepted at 1,800 retailers and 1,150 ATMs nationwide.
City Mart Supermarket operates 19 branches in Myanmar.
