The number of public transport bus commuters surged to over 1.1 million in Yangon last week, showing an upward trend compared to late July, an official from Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA) told Xinhua.

Over 56 percent of daily public transport commuters before the pandemic outbreak have resumed their daily commute on buses while city life is returning back on track after the government lifted some restrictions taken to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Over 88 percent of total public transport buses have resumed their operations these days while some transit buses are still being suspended as universities and the Yangon International Airport are closed as part of preventive measures against the pandemic, the official said.
