NLD party official says they would handle a case of trafficked university student
Dagon University History major final year student Myat Thura Tun was trafficked and sold to a fishing raft in Kha Pyat village, Pyapon Township.

National League for Democracy (NLD) party spokesman Dr. Myo Nyunt told Mizzima that the party would handle the case of the human trafficking of a university student, selling him to a fishing raft in Ayeyarwady Region and persecution of him at workplace, by joining hands with the Region Government.

“Human beings are traded like commodities. These persons lost their labour rights. We couldn’t submit evidence in previous cases but we could provide enough evidence in this case. The region government has prime responsibility for the elimination of such an abhorrent and disgusting case. We will also explore ways of how we can help the region government in elimination of such cases,” he said.

Dr. Myo Nyunt added that the party would meet and ask questions of this human trafficking victim and would discuss within the party how to eliminate human trafficking.

“This news appeared recently so that we could not present this case at the last meeting. We will make sure we present this case in the coming meeting. In the meantime we will ask questions as to how it really happened. It should not have happened. We will provide help in order to avoid similar cases in the future,” he added.

Dagon University History major final year student Myat Thura Tun was trafficked and sold to a fishing raft in Kha Pyat village, Pyapon Township and he had to work on that fishing raft for about two months. His family tracked him down and were able to release him by paying 800,000 kyat. The family said Myat Thura Tun suffered from having the upper part of his ear cut off, grievous injuries on his whole body and he was traumatized. Reportedly, two other human trafficking victims are still on this fishing raft.
