Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi told a video conference call on government officials that volunteers are needed to deal with the COVID-19 emergency, according to state media.

Myanmar currently has 236 coronavirus cases and six deaths.

The State Counsellor said there were not enough health-care workers to conduct COVID-19 prevention and control activities, noting that this was especially because the number of people being kept in quarantine centres was quite large. Therefore, there was a need to place special reliance on the help of volunteers, according to a report in the Global New Light of Myanmar.

She noted that more than one thousand returnees were coming in daily through Myanmar’s borders, and in the long run this number would become quite large.

The current total of COVID-19 cases registered around the world stands at 6.8 million.
