Military accused of meddling in Peacock Generation case

The accused students of Peacock Generation Thangyat team said police personnel disclosed to them that they had been handcuffed before the court under pressure from Tatmadaw (Defence Services) in a case where they are accused of tarnishing the image and dignity of the military.

Peacock Generation Thangyat team leader Zeyar Lwin and four other accused students were produced before the Mayangon Township court, Yangon on May 22 for a fourth hearing and there was a squabble between accused students and police personnel the courtroom due to the handcuffing.

Pai Ye Thu, one of the accused students of Peacock Generation Thangyat team, said while leaving the courtroom, “The policeman from Botataung police station said at the last hearing at Botataung court that they had to handcuff us because of pressure given to them by military personnel when they came to pick us up at Insein prison.”

Journalists asked the prosecutor in this case, Lt. Col. Than Tun Myint from Yangon Region Military Command, for comments about alleged pressure given to police, but Lt. Col. just said, “No, I don’t have any comments on it.”

Mizzima contacted Botataung police station on May 22 for clarification, but the police officer on duty replied they would reply later.
