NLD party spokesman Dr. Myo Nyunt said that Mandalay Region government Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung who is suffering from leukemia cancer could not yet take charge of the CM office again even after receiving chemo therapy for the third time.

The party spokesman said this saying in reply to media after the NLD party central executive committee meeting held at the Yangon party HQ on December 26. He added that the Mandalay CM had to get chemo therapy five times and he would return to perform his duty back only after his final therapy.

Dr. Myo Nyunt said his condition and the therapy meant that it was hard for him to carry out his public duties, but he was able to carry out limited office work.

Mandalay Region government CM Dr. Zaw Myint Maung attended the Yangon meeting. He is also the Vice-Chairman (2) of the NLD party.

Mandalay Region government CM has underwent medical treatement in Bangkok. He has handed over his CM post to region government Minister of Electricity, Energy and Construction Zarni Aung as acting CM since October 25.

Acting CM Zarni Aung said, “We found messages sent by letters and phone calls expressing their concern over the health condition of our CM on social media platforms and in journals. This is reciprocal of benevolence and love between him and the people. Our CM worked for the people and the country with love and benevolence on people and then the people showed their love on our CM too. I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to people on behalf of our CM Dr. Zaw Myint Maung for their showing of love and benevolence on our CM.”

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung is a veteran politician who initially contested as an NLD candidate in the 1990 general elections and won. Although he was elected in this poll the then military regime refused to hand over power to the duly elected parliament and they did not honour the people’s verdict.

And also he won in 2012 by-elections held under President Thein Sein government. He won parliament seat in Amrapura constituency, Mandalay Region in the 2015 general elections and he was appointed as Mandalay CM.
