Mandalay City Development Committee and the general administrative officials on November 13 started removing about 120 homes of squatters near a former airport site in Chanmyathazi township in Mandalay.

Most of the squatters have live there for six years, but very few for much longer.

"When the first notice letter was issued, we submitted appeal letters to some governmental departments that we have students in our families, and requested them to wait until the academic year ends. But we did not receive any reply and we thought they would wait till the academic year ends. About two days ago, they sent another notice letter again. They gave us two days to move. But we did not move, and consequently they removed the homes," said Mya Win, a squatter.
