Local people from Kyaukme told Mizzima that they were concerned over upcoming general elections because of ongoing fighting in the area.

A local said that there remained sporadic gunfire on the outskirts of Kyaukme town between Tatmadaw and Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA).

According to a statement issued by Shan Women Affairs Communication and Activity Association, internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have fled from the conflict zone are now taking refuge at camps opened at monasteries in Pone Wow, Taung Hteik, Kwan Hin, Kaung Lan, Nar Saung, Nanp Hein Khap, Hae Kwi and Naung Kwam villages.

Shan State legislative assembly legislator from Kyaukme constituency (1) Sai Tun Win said that the number of these IDPs would be increased if fighting continued and it would affect the general elections, so people were concerned.

But Kyaukme District Election Commission Chairman Tun Win said that the ongoing fighting being fought around Kyaukme town would not affect the elections.
