On December 1, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) issued a statement calling for the permanent closure of Tatmadaw (military) bases in villages in Karen State by the end of 2020.

According to Chapter 3 of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), no military bases should be set up in civilian areas. An agreement was reached that Tatmadaw has to avoid troop reinforcement and building a new military base but Tatmadaw is expanding new bases violating these provisions, the statement said.

KNLA Brigadier General Sha Htu Waw said that if the Tatmadaw does not withdraw its bases, it will come into contact with the Tatmadaw in KNLA territory.

Brigadier General Zaw Min Tun of the Tatmadaw's True News Information Team could not be reached for comment by phone.
