India will hand over a Kilo class submarine to the Myanmar Navy, India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday, The Hindu reported.

The announcement came days after Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane visited Myanmar and held talks with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander in Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The submarine, purchased from the Soviet Union in the 1980s, has undergone modernisation and belongs to a class of diesel-electric attack submarines built during the Cold War years.
