Freedom of Expression Myanmar (FEM) said that ongoing ‘no vote’ campaigns and ‘boycott election’ campaigns in Myanmar were a democratic debate which deserved protection under international laws and the Myanmar constitution.

FEM issued a press statement on September 14 in response to a warning issued by Union Election Commission (UEC) which says election boycott campaigns are unlawful as per the 2010 Election Law.

The press statement issued by FEM says article 354 of Constitution protects the freedom of expression, publication, opinion and protects peaceful demonstration, assembly, and right to having organization and associations.

FEM urged UEC to make concrete commitments protecting the rights of freedom of expression, assembly and associations granted under the constitution.
